The Presas (よるきば (夜牙) Yoruga Gallic for; Fangs, Japanese for; Night Fangs), alternatively referred to as the Feral Children and formerly known as Katsumi's Hounds, were the second race of supernatural creatures created by the Minor Tenjin named Katsumi Scarlet. Katsumi Scarlet intended them to be a guardian race to the Reikon Kyuuban, where they served as their protectors, servants, and familiars.

While the Reikon Kyuuban were originally Humans turned by Katsumi Scarlet with her blood, the Presas on the other hand were Humans changed on a genetic level through the Dark Magic of a willing S-Class Diabolus named Mammon. However, the Dark Magic on the changed Humans had adverse side effects, causing them to transform into mindless, rampaging Man-Wolves. These "Werewolves", as they were called, possessed berserker rage and hyper aggressive tendencies, up until Katsumi Scarlet managed to successfully subdue the animal within and bind them to her control. These Original Man-Wolves would later sire a new generation, whom would be called the Presas.

The unique characteristics displayed by the Presas would evidently serve as the basis of Werewolf Mythology told by Humanity. As a result, the Presas had come to be referred to as Werewolves (狼人間, Ookami Ningen, Wolfmen). However, the remaining Presas had expressed a distaste for the term Werewolf, preferring their original name. Their sibling race, the Reikon Kyuuban, would also find themselves serving as the basis of Vampire Mythology.

History[]

Creation[]

Sometime after the creation of the Reikon Kyuuban, Katsumi Scarlet.

The Presas and Reikon Kyuuban originally considered each other as equals. But as the centuries passed, that relationship quickly degenerated into a Master-Servant role, much to the chagrin of the 1st Generation Presas. Tensions continued to deteriorate even further until it eventually led to the disastrous Presas Rift. This Rift ultimately resulted in the deaths of the Presas Leadership and the subsequent purge of the Presas. The few surviving Presas soon fell into obscurity, biding their time until Alpha Romulus Fane and Wolf Rain made their presence known in Modern Day Japan.

Presas Rift[]

Following the purge of Wolf Rain, Jiangshi turned his attention towards the loyalist Presas and attempted to exterminate them as well, claiming that despite their faithful service, he can no longer trust their kind as they will continue to be a lingering threat to the Reikon Kyuuban. Jean Regendorf and the Bloodhounds accepted their fate without any misgivings and quietly awaited execution, but Katsumi Scarlet appeared before them and told the Presas to flee and await her return. In order for the loyalist Presas to escape, Katsumi wiped Jiangshi's memories of any mention of Jean and the rest of the survivors. While the bond between the Presas and the Reikon Kyuuban were broken after the Rift, the bond between the Presas and their creator will still hold true. As such, the loyalist Presas of the Great Pack Bloodhound dispersed into the night, fading into obsurity while they waited centuries for Katsumi Scarlet to return.

Return in the Modern Era[]

When Katsumi Scarlet resurfaced in the Modern Era and resumed leadership of the Fushi Coven back from the Dark Council, one of her first acts as returning Queen was recalling Jean Regendorf and the Bloodhounds back to her side. It was revealed that during the interim centuries, the Bloodhounds absorbed the majority of the scattered packs that were unaffiliated with Wolf Rain. Learning from the mistakes of the Presas Rift, Katsumi Scarlet made it clear to the Reikon Kyuuban that the Presas pledged themselves to only her and that they were no longer under the jurisdiction of the Fushi Coven. In addition, she solidified her intentions by formally adopting the Bloodhounds into her personal Great House, House Scarlet and publicly acknowledging Jean Regendorf as the Grand Alpha and the King of the Presas.

Katsumi Scarlet would learn from Jean Regendorf and the Bloodhounds that the traitorous Great Pack, Wolf Rain, was not completely destroyed in the Presas Rift and they also managed to escape from the Reikon Kyuuban. Led by Romulus Fane, who falsely proclaimed himself as the true Grand Alpha, Wolf Rain quietly regained their strength and numbers following the Presas Rift and they sought to enact vengeance on their former Reikon Kyuuban masters and return themselves to their original glory. Jean also revealed that Wolf Rain had attempted to recruit him and the Bloodhounds to their side by proclaiming that their near extinction was purposely instigated by Jiangshi of the Thirteen Dracula under the orders of Katsumi Scarlet. However, Jean rebuffed them and stated he did not side with traitors, as the downfall of the Presas lay solely with Wolf Rain for influencing the original Presas Leadership to rebel against the Fushi Coven.

Biology and Appearance[]

While it was unclear, a Presas who ascended as Grand Alpha would usually have their fur change to snow white to signify their status as leader. This change was seen with Ragna Garmr and Jean Regendorf who both led the Presas as Grand Alpha. Romulus Fane claimed to be the Grand Alpha, but his fur was not snow white, which indicated that he was not the true Grand Alpha as he claimed.

Society and Culture[]

"I am a Presas. To you meek Humans, we are known as the Werewolves of Legend."
Jean Regendorf

Culture[]

A predatory race by nature, the Presas enjoyed the prospect of the hunt, even on a multirealm scale. Throughout the millenia, predatory instincts and the ideology of survival of the fittest managed to uniquely blend with each other This included demonstrations of strength and fighting ability, which were often used as defining factors when selecting an Alpha to lead a Pack, as only the strongest were considered fit to lead. Most Presas constantly vied against each other for supremacy, partially as a means to cull the "weak flock" and ensure that the blood of the strong was passed down to each generation.

The "might is right" philosophy extended through Presas mating habits as well. Competition was fierce between the male Presas during courtship periods, as they would fight each other to determine who will have the right to challenge the female Presas. Female Presas would only accept the advances of their suitor should they manage to defeat her in a duel. The opposite also held true, as a female Presas may choose to challenge a male Presas that caught their interest instead. Like wolves in nature, Presas will develop a pair bond with their chosen loved one and become mated pairs for life. In the event that one of them dies, the widowed Presas may choose another mate, which was usually the case. Some widowed Presas, like Ylva, would never seek another partner following their mate's death. Although Presas were generally a monogamous race, that was not often the case depending on the culture of the Pack, as the dominant Pack Alpha may choose to have a harem instead.

Following the Presas Rift, which saw approximately 97% of the Presas population executed, the Presas effectively became an endangered species. Due to their lower numbers, several of the surviving Presas began seeking out Humans as mates. This led to a higer rise in the number of hybrids amongst the Presas, with one such example being Siegfried Adler. Prior to the Presas Rift, Presas Hybrids were regularly discriminated against due to their diluted bloodline. However, such discrimination became a moot point following their near extinction as most Presas became open to the notion of hybrids if it meant carrying on their bloodline.

Presas primarily traced their descent patrilineally and inheritance was from father to son, mother to daughter. However, inheritance was not entirely set on the dictates of kinship; achievement and merits were also a defining factor and often tipped the scale to those "who rightfully deserved it". Kinship rules functioned as the one of the guiding principles in marriage, residence, and patterns of inheritance for the Presas.

Society and Government[]

Presas government primarily revolved around the concept of a pack structure. Kinship also played an incredibly important to the Presas, as it was largely described to be one of the most important principles in their race. The Presas believed that kinship bonded their people together in such a way that it promoted racial unity amongst each other. In general, the Presas followed the strongest male in their society, whom they referred to as the Grand Alpha. The Grand Alpha was the penmultimate leader of the entire Presas race, which was regularly called the Grand Pack by their people. Due to the concept of the survival of the fittest playing a crucial role in their pack structure, competitive ambition and a desire to rise in position was fostered amongst the male Presas, allowing them to become strong and skilled warriors in the process.

Alphas were the leaders of the packs. In order to assume the title of Alpha, the Presas in question needed to challenge the presiding Alpha and defeat them in a mortal duel. The ranks of the packmates were determined on their individual achievements and successes on and off the battlefield. Following the Alpha position was the Beta, who for all intents and purposes served as the second in command in the pack. The Beta position was oftentimes the second strongest in the pack or they could chosen by the Alpha. In the event an Alpha unavailable to command or was killed in battle, the Beta Presas could assume leadership of the pack until the proper selection process can be invoked. Additionally, a third position existed in a Presas Pack and that was the Gamma. Acting as third in command, the Gamma was able to command the pack but can have their position overruled by the Beta and Alpha respectively.

Due to the pack-like nature of their people, the Presas regularly viewed their societal structure as one large singular pack that was split into several levels:

  • The Grand Pack was the representative body of the Presas and was composed of all the Great Packs. It was primarily led by the strongest Presas amongst their entire race, who was largely referred as the Grand Alpha. The Grand Alpha of the Presas was alternatively referred to as the King of the Presas. The Grand Alpha was aided by a secondary ruling body called the Presas Circle, which was composed of the oldest and wisest Presas amongst their people.
  • Great Packs were composed of several packs that were bonded to each other through familial ties and ancient alliances. Each Great Pack was led by a Great Alpha that was chosen from amongst the Pack Alphas. Great Packs were known to possess distinct cultures from one another. There were several dozen Great Packs in existence, although the number had been greatly reduced following the Presas Rift. The only known Great Packs to had survived the cull were the loyalist Bloodhounds led by Jean Regendorf and the traitorous Wolf Rain led by Romulus Fane.
  • Packs largely referred to a group of Presas. The size of each pack varied and could range from a small group to a large group. Each pack was led by a dominant Alpha. Their status as Alpha was determined by their strength and achievements on and off the battlefield. The Alpha of each pack were granted the unique right of personally ruling their packs in any way they desired as long as they adhered to the overarching authority of the Grand Alpha and their subordinate leaders, the Great Alphas of the Great Packs.

Powers and Abilities[]

Physical Abilities[]

Immense Physicality: Their various abilities and hybrid forms aside, one thing the vast majority of Presas exhibit is enhanced physicality and musculature. Obviously, this varies by individual, but given that strength is used as a deciding factor in the selection of the Grand Alpha, the general rule of thumb is that Presas are incredibly strong.

  • Monstrous Brute Strength: While the Reikon Kyuuban were largely known for speed and finesse, the Presas were regularly known for their brute strength.
  • Immense Durability:
  • Enhanced Speed and Agility:

Heightened Senses: As a general rule of thumb, a Presas's natural vision and hearing had been significantly enhanced, up to the point where they can see and hear things miles away with great clarity. They were able to see beyond the visible spectrum of light, and were able to cleverly use thermal vision to detect heat signatures during a hunt. The Presas were able to perceive things in a more detailed manner and can easily detect incoming attacks and react accordingly.

  • Lúavista (月子の空想 (ラビスタ) Rabisuta; Gallic for Moon Sight, Japanese for Vision of the Moon Children): Presas possessed another specialized field of vision called the Moon Children Vision, where they were able to detect individuals with Reikon Kyuuban and Presas blood and tune in on them. Presas Hunters used the Vision to their advantage, as it allowed them to spot enemies at a significant range and determine who was friend or foe from bystanders. Upon activation, Moon Children Vision almost reduced sound to near nothing, and dulled visual details as means to enhance target focus. Individuals with Reikon Kyuuban or Presas Blood were often differentiated with a faint purple outline to their eyes. Additionally, some displayed a keener version, which displayed a Reikon Kyuuban reiatsu in shades of purple: the darker the shade, the higher the target's strength.
  • Caza (猟中月(カザ) Kaza; Gallic for Hunt, Japanese for Hunting Among the Moon): The Presas, tapping into their animalistic instincts, make for every effective trackers. Using Caza, they can differentiate between scents, like that of a bloodhound. It has been said that once a Presas catches a target's scent, there is no escape, and that the Presas can find them anywhere.

Natural Weaponry: As is often the case in werewolf-related media, a Presas have various natural weaponry, namely their jaws and claws. This goes beyond simple applications such as biting or slashing, with a number of abilities granted to them.

  • Enhanced Bite: During a Presas's Transformed State, they gained possession of a mouth capable of producing an extremely powerful bite force with their jaws and fangs. They were able to unhinge or extend their jaws to create a larger mouth. The fangs were razor-sharp, able to easily slash and rip through anything. The most savage among the Presas were often seen tearing their prey's head off their body with relative ease. It was also noted as quite durable, up to the extent that a Presas could rip apart armour, catch a Zanpakuto with no effort and may even break it with a slight jerk.
  • Enhanced Claws: During a Presas's Transformed State, they gained possession of a prominent set of retractable claws. Presas had been noted to easily cut and rip through flesh with savage and brutal efficiently, lacerating anything it came into contact with. While a Presas was more than capable of handling a weapon during their Transformed State, most prefer to utilize their claws.
  • Tsumeshasen (爪斜線, Claw Slasher): Used when a Presas could not rely on close-quarters combat to deal with an enemy, it was a technique intended for medium to long range battles. Using their claws as a form of outlet, a Presas was able to create blades of reishi whenever they made a slashing motion, hurling their attacks at their enemy. The Claw Slasher was misleadingly fast, and could easily bisect an unaware individual in moments. In normal circumstances, a Presas's Claw Slasher could not be stopped unless an equal or greater force overwhelms the attack or when contact was made. The size and power behind the attack was supposedly determined by a Presas's age. Jean Regendorf, who many considered to be the oldest Presas alive, can create potentially create a Claw Slasher attack as large as a skyscraper if he so chooses.

Presas Abilities[]

Immortality: Presas were biologically immortal, as their bodies do not age upon reaching maturity. While a Presas does not age, their body can become weaker and smaller with the passage of time, forcing the elderly Presas to retire from active duty and assume a guardianship role in the packs. Although a Presas cannot die through natural causes, they could be killed through physical injury, extreme trauma, and severe mutilation to their body. In addition, a Presas can also die from starvation or by losing the will to live. Dying through these means would cause their bodies to shut down and waste away to nothingness.

Enhanced Healing Factor: As an extension of their immortality, a Presas were able to survive from injuries that were lethal to Humans and Shinigami. They were able to heal from any wound almost instantly aside from decapitation. It can be surmised that any limb or organ can be healed given enough time as long as they had energy and spiritual power to supply the regeneration. Their healing factor was often stated to be far superior to the Reikon Kyuuban's own recovery ability.

Telepathy: Every Presas possessed a degree of telepathy that allowed them to communicate with each other over vast distances and hear the thoughts of others. However, a Presas' telepathy was strictly limited to their packmates and only when they were in their Lōcuria or Vociferante forms. A Presas can willingly sever their telepathic link with their wolf brethren but the change was irreversible and would permanently mark them as a social outcast. Alpha Presas were known to possess a more developed version of telepathy that allowed them to access the thoughts of the entire pack as well as to communicate with other Alphas. By extension, the Grand Alpha could exercise a far more superior version of telepathy over the entire Presas race, and could allegedly communicate with everyone.

  • Alpha Howl: An Alpha Presas was able to use their strong telepathic link over their packmates and force them to obey orders, even against their will. The effect was instantaneous and the packmates were unable to disobey the command. Any effort to reject the orders of an Alpha would subject a Presas to immense and excruciating pain until they complied to the command.

Frenético (激昂夜 (フレンチコ) Furentiko; Gallic for Frantic, Japanese for Nighttime Wrath): A more bestial expression of their latent abilities and one tied to their animal instincts. The greater the bloodlust, the greater the strength of a Presas grows, with no set ceiling. The level appears to vary between Presas, and even between generations. The effect of Frenético can be enhanced whenever Lōcuria or Vociferante was invoked.

Lōcuria in use

Lōcuria (無援月光の暴行 (ルクリャ) Rukuria; Gallic for Lunacy, Japanese for Helpless Moonlight's Outrage): Lōcuria was an ability developed by the early Presas in response to the berserker-like tendencies imposed onto them by the Vociferante. By using their spiritual power as a form of catalyst, a Presas was able to transform into a partial beast form to enhance their combat potential without having to rely on the overwhelming rage of their Vociferante. Mastery of the Lōcuria allowed a Presas to manipulate the speed and level of their transformation, although it was regarded to be such a strenuous process that many choose no to advance their skills. In addition, the transformation serves as a means to condense a Presas' spiritual and physical power into a more compact form in a manner similar to that of a Clad-type Fullbring. In addition, Lōcuria enhanced a Presas's ability to communicate with various types of animals, which provided a tactical advantages when out on the field. Due to the ease and accessbility the ability, the Presas have come to rely more on the Lōcuria than the Vociferante, with many seeing the latter as a last resort.

Vociferante[]

The Vociferante (ボシペランツ Bosiperantu ; Gallic for "Howling") was something all Presas possessed. It was a term used to describe the name of a Presas' transformation into a wolf-like monster, a Werewolf. In order to assume their true form, the Presas must be able to hear the rumbling noise inside their body and see the growling head of a wolf. Once a Presas can feel those two things, they must subconsciously reach out to the Wolf Head and grab onto it, which in turn will activate the transformation process.

In this form, a Presas is nothing but a mindless killer, savage and brutal to the highest degree.

Trivia[]

  • Following the death of Ragna Garmr in the Presas Rift, Romulus Fane of Wolf Rain assumed leadership as the Grand Alpha. However, his ascension to Grand Alpha was disputed and unacknowledged by the surviving Presas unaffiliated with Wolf Rain. To the loyalist Presas, the title of Grand Alpha belonged to Jean Regendorf of the Bloodhounds, as he was the true slayer of Ragna Garmr.
  • Lōcuria was an artificial ability originally developed by Romulus Fane to escape the hyper aggression tendencies exhibited by their Vociferante state. When Lōcuria was deemed successful, it was given to every Presas through genetic modification and hereditary inheritance.
